The long runway

Finningley through the years

  1. 1915

    A flying ground

    Finningley opens as a Royal Flying Corps training station, the start of aviation on this site.

  2. 1936

    RAF Finningley

    The station is rebuilt in the expansion period and becomes a bomber station.

  3. 1961

    Vulcans

    Finningley becomes a V-bomber base, home to the Avro Vulcan.

  4. 1992

    The air shows

    The RAF Finningley air show becomes one of the largest in the country.

  5. 2005

    Robin Hood Airport

    The site reopens as a commercial airport serving South Yorkshire.

  6. 2016

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport

    Rebranded, the airport grows to more than a million passengers a year.

  7. 2022

    Closure

    Commercial operations cease. The runway and terminal remain intact.

  8. 2027

    Reopening

    Fly Doncaster Ltd returns the airport to service.

A local landmark

Robin Hood stays

The Robin Hood statue has stood in the terminal since the airport opened — a nod to the legend that gives the surrounding area its name. It remains in place for the reopening.
